FAQ
Questions owners ask before they start.
About the firm & credentials
Are you a CPA?
No. Roots Tax Pro is led by Daouda Traore, who holds an MBA, is a CTEC-Registered Tax Preparer (#A337828) with a current California tax-preparer bond, an IRS PTIN holder and Authorized e-file Provider, and a QuickBooks ProAdvisor. We are not a licensed CPA firm and don’t perform audits or attestation work. When your situation needs a CPA or attorney, we’ll say so and work alongside one.
What can’t you do that a CPA can?
Audited or reviewed financial statements, attestation and assurance work, valuations for legal or transactional purposes, and representing you in an IRS or FTB audit. We can prepare and e-file your returns, plan your taxes, keep your books and payroll, and help you respond to routine notices.
Who actually does the work?
Daouda does. You work with one person, not a rotating team.
Pricing
Why don’t you bill hourly?
Hourly billing punishes you for asking questions. A flat monthly fee means you can call when something comes up, and you always know the cost.
How much does a tax return cost?
It depends on your entity and the forms involved — a single Schedule C is very different from an S-corp return with payroll and depreciation. You get a flat quote before any work begins.
Is there a contract or a minimum?
Monthly engagements are month-to-month with 30 days’ notice. There’s a practical minimum of around $500/mo for ongoing work.
Do I have to catch up my books before starting?
Usually yes, at least partially — planning and accurate returns need clean books. Catch-up work is quoted separately and up front.
How we work
Do you work with my current CPA?
Yes, often. We keep the books, run payroll, and handle planning and the return; your CPA handles anything that requires a license. Many clients keep both.
Do you use QuickBooks only?
We work primarily in QuickBooks Online, where the ProAdvisor tools live. If you’re on something else, we’ll discuss moving over during onboarding.
How long does onboarding take?
About a week for a business with reasonably current books — longer if there’s catch-up to do.
Where are you located, and do you meet in person?
We’re based in Santa Rosa and serve all of Sonoma County. Meetings are by appointment — by video anywhere in California, or in person at a convenient coworking/meeting space. There’s no walk-in office yet.
Security
How do I send you sensitive documents?
Through the secure client portal — never by email or the website form. Please don’t send SSNs, bank details, or tax documents by email.
